˚★ Secret of Monkey Island: A Review
π΄☠️ Secret of Monkey Island: A Review
Secret of Monkey Island was extremely fun to play through- I played as Guybrush Threepwood, a wannabe pirate, and upon consulting three head pirates at a place called the Scumm Bar, I was told I had to pass three trials in order to become one. These were sword-fighting, thievery, and treasure hunting.
Secret of Monkey Island had a mashup of various mechanics and was combined with gorgeous pixel art and individually painted frames for each character's dialogue! One thing I loved about the game was how many people or animals you could interact with in one room; I enjoyed seeing the headshot art for each character.
Secret of Monkey Island improved upon text adventure/puzzle game mechanics whilst also giving me more freedom by providing more straightforward action options that, depending on what was in the environment, could be used. These included "open, talk to, look at, etc." My issue in my previously covered games was that many actions were assigned to numbers or letters on my keyboard, and I often forgot which was which. With this system of options being available on the bottom of my screen, I as able to progress through the game more easily.
I find the evolution and refinement of these controls within a ten year span (1980-1990) to be very interesting; I appreciate how the controls became more refined over time and in situations like Monkey Island, were placed in a box for selection. Overall, Secret of Monkey Island is a very beautifully crafted game, and I enjoyed seeing what it had to offer!
